The Pony has always been cautious of water. A few common hacking routes that we ride include a stream that can get fairly deep (up to The Pony’s belly).
In summer months it runs a bit lower, but with many horses using it (as well as tractors using it as a ford sometimes) the bottom of the stream can be changeable. This gives The Pony pause for concern no matter how many times we go through it.
“Is it safe?!”
“It’s safe, Pony, walk on.”
“But what if there’s something dangerous?!”
“I can see the bottom, Pony, it’s clear.”
“Fine, I will go in, but I’m watching for crocodiles.” The Pony takes a few careful steps then SPLASH! “I killed it!”
“There was nothing there, Pony.”
“But if there was, it is so scared of me now, it will never approach again.”
“Whatever you say, Pony, lets keep going.”
The Pony peers into the water, “Until next time crocodiles, until next time.”
